Nursing as a profession is based on scientific knowledge acquired over four years at a nursing college. Nurses will be able to use this knowledge to assist patients to avoid disease, educate people about health issues, improve their health, and give physical and psychological care.

There are Three Types of Nursing in South Africa

Registered Nurses or Nursing Sister

They are responsible for the supervision of enrolled and enrolled Auxiliary Nurses as well as typical responsibilities

Enrolled Nurses
They perform limited Nursing Care.

Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries
They perform basic procedures and care for patients on a general level.


Eligibility Requirements:

Admission Requirements:

All our courses are offered on a full-time basis. Admission is based on an entrance exam, which tests the students level of understanding according to the course that the student is applying for entrance into.
National Senior Certificate/ Grade 12 or equivalent qualification at exit level 4.

Admission Requirements for Bridging Course (R683)

  • 65% pass mark in the entry exam
  • Must be a full-time learner (if it is part-time, permission to study from the place of work is required)
  • Clear legible police certified copies of the following:
    – Standard 8, 9, 10 or equivalent thereof x 3 copies
    – Recognition of Prior Learning or Letter of support from the place of work (if you have no matric)
    – Minimum of two (2) years working or employed full-time as an Enrolled Nurse
    – Indemnity e.g. Denosa, Nehawu etc. x 3
    – ID copy x 3
    – Marriage certificate/Divorce decree (where applicable) x3
    – Affidavit (where applicable)
    – SANC current receipt x 3
    – SANC certificate x 3
  • ID size photos x 3
    _ Additional Information for Foreign learners
    – Clear legible police certified copies of the following:
    – Copy of passport x 3
    – Study permit x3
    – SAQA approved/converted results x3
    – Letter of support from the Foreign Workforce Programme
    – Letter of support from the Embassy
    – Medical Aid membership proof

NB: Please include the other requirements mentioned as per the programme you are registering for.

How to Apply to Shekinah Nursing School:

Step 1

NB: The above minimum selection criteria must first be met in full for an applicant to be considered further where the institutional selection criteria will be applied.

Step 2
ONLY if your National Senior Certificate meets the above requirements you may apply to participate in the preselection assessment process.

All applicants must provide the following documents on application:
Certified copies of the:

  • National Senior Certificate results,
  • Identity document (ID)/passport,
  • South African Nursing Council (SANC) registration certificate/s where applicable,

As well as:

  • Current SANC annual licensing certificate where applicable.
  • Completed application form for pre-selection (OLG form)
  • Proof of payment for the selection assessment


The following full-time Programmes Offered in Shekinah Nursing School:

Nursing courses offered:

  • Certificate course leading to enrolment as an Auxiliary Nurse – R.2176 (phasing out, no new intakes)
  • Certificate course leading to enrolment as Enrolled Nurse – R.2175 (phasing out, no new intakes)
  • Diploma: Bridging Course for Enrolled Nurses leading to registration as a General Nurse – R.683 (last intake )
  • Post Basic programmes for specialised training in areas such as intensive care, Operating Theatre, Trauma Nursing and Occupational Health.

Health Sciences
Health Science courses offered:

  • Diploma in Operating Department Assistance ( 3 years)


Theoretical examinations are conducted by the South African Nursing Council at the end of each study year. Practical examinations (clinical) are conducted by Shekinah Nursing School at the end of each study year.

The successful learner can register at the South African Nursing Council as an Enrolled Nurse (Staff Nurse).
