Nursing is based on scientific knowledge which is acquired during the four years of studies at a nursing college before it becomes a profession for a well-trained student.
This knowledge will equip nurses to educate people on health issues, help prevent disease, enhance healthy leaving and support ill patients both mentally, physically and psychologically. As a health professional, your requirement is to be able to treat every patient and make sure their physical, psychological and social well-being are properly kept.
An individual practitioner guided by nursing acts and ethical codes is well known as a Nurse. An extremely rewarded career that has an opportunity to make a positive impact on people lives on a daily basis.
After four years of completion with the nursing programme, some opportunity exists for qualified nurses to further education in various specialities e.ge nursing management, critical care nurse, trauma and emergency nursing, operating theatre nursing, orthopaedic nursing, etc.

The University of the Free State’s (UFS) School of Nursing remains at the forefront of nursing education with their innovative simulation, teaching, and learning facilities. The school also houses the Academy for Continuing Nursing Education which presents Short Learning Programmes.

Application Open and Closing Date: The application is open from 1 April to 31st July 2022

The South African Nursing Council (SANC), the Council of Higher Education (CHE), and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) approved the curriculum for the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of the Free State (UFS).

Prospective students are encouraged to apply no later than 31 July 2022 to be considered for the first selection committee scheduled for 15 September 2020. Selection will be based on academic performance.

According to the SANC, only 75 first-year students can be registered for the Bachelor of Nursing at the UFS State in 2021.

Eligibility Requirement

The minimum requirements to apply for a Bachelor of Nursing are:

1. Admission Point (AP) 30
2. Language of instruction 50%
3. ** Mathematics 40% or Mathematical Literacy 70%
4. ** Life Sciences 60% or Physical Sciences 50%

** Either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is required, as well as either Life Sciences or Physical Sciences.

• Please ensure that your application (with all the supporting documents, including a medical certificate) is complete.
• Incomplete applications will not be considered for selection.

Legacy Nursing Qualifications: According to the South African Nursing Council (SANC) Circular 7/2016 Legacy Nursing Qualifications are phasing out. The last intake for these programmes was 31 December 2019 (Nursing Programmes 2019).)

How To Apply

  • Applicants currently in Grade 12 are requested to provide school stamped copies of final Grade 11.
  • Each prospective student must complete the online application.
  • Once your online application has been submitted and processed, you will receive a student number (Reference number).
  • Applicants writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through IEB or SACAI examining bodies can apply online by selecting “National Senior Certificate” under the Results Detail page of the online application process.
  • Applicants who completed the GED and would like to study towards an undergraduate curricular qualification are advised to register and complete a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or international equivalent.
  • Applicants who did not complete SC/NSC/IEB must have USAF accreditation from the examination board for South African Universities.
